3.1 Connections: Students reinforce and further their knowledge of other disciplines through the foreign language. (visual arts and language arts)
4.1 Comparisons: Students demonstrate understanding of the nature of language through comparisons of the language studied and their own.

3. TSWBAT recognize letters of the alphabet as they listen to a book.
4. TSWBAT introduce themselves in Spanish.
_Context and Rationale:
This lesson on the Spanish alphabet fits into this art unit because the students will be doing an art project that involves the letters that they have just learned. The project is modeled after the coconut tree from the story Chicka Chicka Boom Boom but uses their name instead. Students are allowed to use their creativity with this project by using a variety of material. The alphabet is a great way to begin learning a language as other concepts can be built off from it and it allows them to make comparisons with their own language. After learning the alphabet they will be learning how to introduce themselves which is a very important skill to know when speaking a foreign language.

During Activities: Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Reading (Standard: 1.2 Objective: 3)
The teacher will then read the students Chicka Chicka Boom Boom in Spanish which has all of the letters of the alphabet to further develop their understanding of the alphabet in Spanish. Questions may be asked at the end like what letter is this or what letter is B?
Name Art Work (Standards: 1.2,3.1 Objectives: 1,4)
Once the students seem to have a good understanding of the information they have just learned, they will make a coconut tree like the one in the story with letters from their name. After they are done, the teacher will teach the students how to introduce themselves in Spanish. The teach will then ask the students their name and the letters in their name to develop introduction skills in Spanish and to review the alphabet.
Post-Activity: I Can Do Statements (Standard: 1.2 Objectives: 2,3,4)
At the end of the lesson for the today, students will receive a piece of paper with I can do statements that say:
~I can say at least 10 letters from the Spanish alphabet.
~I can introduce myself in Spanish.
All of these will have columns for no help, some help, and help. The teacher will collect these to get student feedback on what they need to work on for the next lesson. If time permitted they will listen to the alphabet song again as a final review for the lesson.
Assessment:
Since this is a new topic for the students, they will be mainly tested on their participation while singing and overall willingness to learn Spanish. Observations can also be made about their responses to their artwork to see if they understand the lesson. At the end, students will fill out I can do statements for teacher feedback and self-evaluation of the lesson which will be taken into account for planning the next lessons.
Differentiation:
This lesson meets a variety of learners as there are many different ways of presenting the material. There will be singing to help students who are musical or learn better through a song. There will also be many visuals through the reading and with the song to help the students make connections between the words and the picture. Movement will be used during the art work which will help students who like to be involved and learn with art. Speaking opportunities will also be given to students to practice introductions and to practice saying some of the letters in Spanish.
