2.2 Cultures: Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the products and perspectives of the culture studied.
3.1 Connections: Students reinforce and further their knowledge of other disciplines through the foreign language. (visual arts and social studies)
Objectives:
1. TSWBAT create three-dimensional artwork to express a story in nature.
2. TSWBAT learn the perspective of the Huichol in comparison to their own.
3. TSWBAT understand the teacher talking about the Huichol culture in Spanish and their products and practices.
4. TSWBAT tell the story of their artwork using as much Spanish as possible.
Context and Rationale:
This lesson is part of the art unit because it is a form of art that is from a culture that they are probably not familiar with. It teaches them a new way to express themselves through the use of different material for another culture such as yarn. I feel that it is very important for students to learn about the practices, products, and perspectives of another culture. This will be done after learning animals because then they can describe the surroundings of animals.

Pre-Activity: Learning Nature Vocabulary (Standards: 1.2 Objective: 4)
The students will first learn different vocabulary words related to nature so that they can describe the artwork of the Huichol People. The poster from last time will be reused so that the students can practice saying these words and refer back to previous learned vocabulary.
During Activities: The Huichol People and their Artwork (Standards: 1.2,2.1,2.2,3.1 Objectives: 2,3)
With the PowerPoint, the Huichol culture will be explained and showed where they are from. Their artwork will be talked about how in the past it was a way to tell their story and the myths that they had to explain the world. Now it is used to preserve and share their culture with the rest of the world (in Spanish). After explaining the artwork of the Huichol, the students will be able to talk about their own culture and what are some ways they can tell stories about themselves and the history and why people tell stories (in English).
Yarn Art (Standards: 2.1,3.1 Objectives: 1,4)
The students will then have the chance to try this form of artwork and make their own story. They are required to make something in nature that reminds them of a good memory or something that is important to them. After the students are done and waiting for the art to dry, they will talk about their artwork and what story it tells. They will explain it using as much Spanish as they know. Colors, numbers, numbers, and animals will have already been discussed from previous lessons so they will be able to use these words in their explanation as well as words learned about nature.
Post-Activity: I Can Do Statements (Standard: 1.2 Objectives: 3,4)
At the end of the lesson for the today, students will receive a piece of paper with I can do statements that say:
~I can tell a friend or a parent one interesting fact I learned about the Huichol people.
~I can explain my artwork using at least 5 words in Spanish.
All of these will have columns for fluidly with no help, with some help, and this is my goal. The teacher will collect these to get student feedback on what they need to work on for the next lesson.
Assessment:
Since this is a new topic for the students, they will be mainly tested on their participation on the singing and overall willingness to learn Spanish. Observations can also be made about their responses to their artwork to see if they understand the lesson. At the end, students will fill out I can do statements for teacher feedback and self-evaluation of the lesson which will be taken into account for planning the next lessons.
Differentiation:
This lesson meets a variety of learners as there are many different ways of presenting the material. There will be singing to help students who are musical or learn better through a song. There will also be many visuals through the reading and with the song to help the students make connections between the words and the picture. Movement will be used during the art work which will help students who like to be involved and learn with art. Speaking opportunities will also be given to students to practice introductions and to practice saying some of the letters in Spanish.
